QuickTime Screen Recording Tutorial

Business Context

Organizations often rely on subject matter experts to create demonstrations, knowledge transfers, and software walkthroughs. However, many employees have access to recording tools without knowing how to use them effectively. This project focused on reducing that barrier by creating a concise, task-oriented learning resource that enabled users to begin producing screen recordings quickly.


Business Challenge

Users needed to record and share software demonstrations but lacked confidence in the setup and recording process. Existing documentation was either incomplete or required unnecessary searching before users could complete a simple task.

The objective was to reduce friction by providing a short, visual resource that allowed learners to move from "I've never used QuickTime" to successfully recording their screen in just a few minutes.

Rather than creating a feature-by-feature software demonstration, I designed the tutorial around the learner's workflow.

The instruction follows the same sequence users experience when completing the task:

Design Decisions

Why a short video instead of a full eLearning course?

The performance gap was procedural rather than conceptual.

Learners needed immediate guidance while completing a task, making a concise video demonstration more effective than a longer course.

Why organize around workflow instead of software menus?

People remember tasks better than interface locations.

By teaching the recording process in the same order users experience it, the instruction becomes easier to recall and apply on the job.


What I Learned

This project strengthened my understanding that successful technology training is less about explaining every feature and more about identifying the minimum information learners need to perform confidently.

That philosophy continues to influence how I approach software enablement, workflow documentation, and technology adoption projects today.
